Shaping the National Framework for the Local Curriculum in Nepal

Conservation and climate change are to feature prominently in the new National Framework for the Local Curriculum. DFE's partner, Wildlife Conservation Nepal, has been working in close cooperation with the Government of Nepal, developing a framework that will give guidance to teachers on how they can design local curricula that are focused on issues relevant to the areas where they teach, such as, for example, environmental subjects.

A consultation workshop for the finalization of the national framework on the local curriculum was jointly organized by the Curriculum Development Center/ Ministry of Education (CDC/MOE) Nepal and NPP (a joint venture of WCN and DFE) on February 16, 2014 in Kathmandu Nepal. Representatives from various relevant government institutions, INGOs and NGOs working in the field of Education in Nepal participated in the workshop. A total of 62 participants from CDC/ MOE, National Center for Education Development, Non Formal Education Center, HIRD, MOE, Department of Education, IUCN Nepal, Hatemalo, National Private and Boarding School Organization Nepal (N PABSON), District Education Offices – Chitwan, Rasuwa, Bardia, Sankhuwasabha, Dhading, Private and Boarding School Organization Nepal (PABSON)  and WCN participated in the stakeholder consultation workshop.

The final draft framework was reviewed and was put for discussion during the workshop. Conservation and climate change issues have been identified as topics of utmost importance to be included in the local curriculum. As a follow up, a core group  discussion took place for two days from February 19 – 20, 2014 in which experts from WCN, NCED, NFEC, DoE led by CDC reviewed the input gathered from the stakeholder workshop to be included in the framework. The process for  finalization, design and publication is being conducted throughout February and March by the CDC.  It was also decided that the local curricula developed by WCN for Jhuwani Resource Center, Chitwan and Shyamewangphel Resource Center, Rasuwa would be presented as  outstanding examples in the national framework.
